Mariah Havens Daley and her husband Owen Daley are pictured here in this photo taken circa 1890(?). James and Bridget Daly emigrated from Ireland's County Westmeath in 1872 with their 15 children (including Owen) and settled in central Connecticut. Owen's son Edward is Rosie and Dash's great-grandfather, and father of Granddaddy Jim.
When I traveled to Ireland with Jim and Auntie M. in 1999 on a cycling tour of the southwestern coast, we took a side trip and did a bit of family history research. We actually met up with some Havens and Daly relations!
Here is another photo of Mariah Daley, later in life (the handwritten date on the photo's margin says 1922-3):

I love these photos you post. What a great idea!
ReplyDeleteThanks! I have a rather ambitious goal of scanning all of my grandmother's photos at high-res and digitally repairing them. Some of them look like they were wadded up into a ball with all the creases, so it's a lot of work.
ReplyDeleteWhen it's slow at the office I call it "brushing up on my Photoshop skills." ;-)
BTW, it's hard to see at low-res, but somebody actually tried to hand-paint the lacework into Mariah's collar! My best guess is that the detail was lost in the photographic process and the photographer hastily tried to fix?
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome that you have all your family history. Mine was lost long long ago somewhere between Ireland and here.

ReplyDeleteThe photo that was stolen out of Chris' Jeep might have been this same portrait, and I forget how I got the scan of it (Aunt Judy?); I know I don't have the original. The albums that I have came from Aunt Dot before she died. They were Grandma Daley's. Thanks for the data, M'reen! I was pretty sure I wasn't quite right and will change my post.
